Messy Church

About Messy Church:

Messy Church at North Ringwood Uniting is a different way of doing church. It is typically held once a month, includes hands-on creative experiences, a celebration and a meal.

Messy Church is church, not a kids’ club or bible study. Each monthly Messy Church session is Christ-centred and appropriate for all ages. There is a strong emphasis on hospitality, from the mailed invitation, the welcome at the door, crafts and games based on the theme, a shared worship time concluding with a sit-down evening meal. The celebration is an invitation to worship through song, prayers and story. Creativity in many forms is encouraged, nurtured and explored by people of all ages, together.

What happens at Messy Church:

A typical Messy Church has these elements:

  • a joyful welcome
  • creative exploration of a Bible story or theme through many varied experiences for people of different learning styles
  • children and adults are not separated and are encouraged to explore the story or theme together
  • a short celebration follows the activity time. It usually consists of story, song and prayer
  • the sharing of a delicious home-cooked meal. Dietary requirements are catered for

The Messy Church format encourages strong relationship building which in turn supports the faith development of all who attend.

What happens during the rest of the month:

In addition to Messy Church sessions, North Ringwood Uniting hosts

  • Messy Gatherings – relaxed, informal and fun get-togethers
  • Messy Chatter – small discussion groups considering life and faith (child minding included)

Who’s it for:

North Ringwood Uniting Messy Church is for all ages and all stages of faith. The sessions are designed to welcome, encourage, stimulate and challenge all in attendance. The strengthening of relationships within the congregation is enhanced through close interaction at every stage.
